It seems that Visual Studio does not allow the user to compile/build individual source files if they are not playing some kind of role in the more general project solution (One would have to create, compile and build a separate project for each tiny Fortran program). May 16, 2018 First, understand the layout and views once you launch Visual Studio 2017: Next, review the standard build process for a Visual Studio project: If C++ is not an already installed language in Visual Studio, you need to install Desktop development with C++ through the Visual Studio. I have been using Visual Studio for a coding class at my university. I usually code in C++, but my professor wants us to download a file that has fortran code in it (It is a.f file). I have tried to download other compilers and just can't get it to open the file. I am a novice when it comes to compilers and downloading the correct thing. I really need help with how I can get a Fortran compiler with Visual Studio and how to open the file after it is downloaded. My professor had some recommended links that weren't helpful at all, so I'd like to just continue to use visual studio if possible. Any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated.
